The Munros

The Munros are the 284 mountains over 3000 feet in Scotland. Although the altitudes might not seem like much in comparison to mountains in Colorado, it's important to remember that most hikes begin at sea level and the conditions are often much more difficult than anything I've done in Colorado. Scottish trails are often nonexistent; when they do exist they are often very steep and overgrown with deep peat and heather (both make for difficult hiking). Extreme weather moves in quickly and often (75mph winds and less than 50ft visibility on peaks are common), and navigation skills are essential.

That said, the Munros are also often incredibly beautiful - a good day on a Munro can make for one of the best hiking days available anywhere. Hiking them is also a great way to get off the highways and really see some of the incredible Highlands and Scottish countryside.
