Sandhill crane population is estimated to be in the 500,000 range. Trappers and fur traders in the Old West decribed the Platte River as being a mile wide and an inch deep. This was an ideal environment for sustaining the cranes. The Platte is quite depleted by damming and agricultural diversion and the habitat is somewhat threatened these days.
